What makes VILT different from a recorded webinar

VILT is defined by interaction. A facilitator works with a group toward specific learning objectives, using discussion, polls, breakout rooms, shared whiteboards and live exercises so participants practice rather than just watch. Group sizes are usually kept small enough for everyone to take part.

A webinar, by contrast, is typically a presentation to a large audience with limited participation, often a question and answer segment at the end. Both have a place, but only VILT is a true substitute for classroom training.

This distinction matters for tracking as well. VILT sessions are usually linked to learning objectives, assessments and completion records, whereas webinar attendance is often recorded only as a registration.

Designing virtual sessions that hold attention

Attention is harder to hold through a screen than in a room, so virtual sessions work best when they are shorter than a classroom day and built around frequent activity. Many organizations split a full-day classroom course into several shorter virtual sessions spread over days or weeks, with practice at work in between.

Common VILT challenges and how to address them

Typical problems include unreliable connections, screen fatigue, multitasking during sessions, and the difference between being logged in and being engaged. Lightweight materials help on low bandwidth, regular breaks reduce fatigue, and interactive tasks that require a response make engagement visible. Recording sessions, where policy allows, gives people in difficult time zones a way to catch up, although live participation should remain the goal.

It also helps to agree on expectations at the start, such as keeping cameras on during activities where possible and using the chat for questions, so participants know how to take part.
